MX-5 Mk1 Mk2 Short Shifter Installation Guide
This document provides a comprehensive guide for customers looking to install a short shifter on the 5-speed and early 6-speed gearboxes found in the Mk1 (NA) and Mk2 (NA) Mazda MX-5. Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance and a smooth shifting experience.
Installation Steps
When installing the new component parts into the gearbox, follow the order outlined below:
Short shifter spacer (identified by the U-shaped notch)
Short shifter collar (identified by 3x 6mm holes and a grub screw)
Short shifter gear lever
Upper pivot ball bush
Tabbed spring washer
Short shifter retention plate
Rebuilding the Shifter
It is strongly recommended to rebuild the shifter simultaneously using a 1997 rebuild kit. This ensures the best shifting performance from the short shifter and enhances the overall driving experience.
Notes on Later Gearboxes
For later gearboxes, there are two pins used to locate the shifter. It is important to note that the rearmost pin must be left pressed out to install the short shifter spacer. Additionally, both pins need to be temporarily pressed out to replace the lower wave washer and pivot ball bush.
By following these guidelines, customers can successfully install a short shifter and enjoy improved shifting performance in their Mazda MX-5.
